The extraordinary in the ordinary

The works of the Viennese directors Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel, which have won numerous awards and have been presented at international festivals, are among the most interesting and captivating in the recent history of Austrian cinema. Socially realistic and poetic at the same time, they also and above all fascinate for their sincere affection towards their protagonists.

The section To person opens with the debut in Rainer Frimmel's documentary Notes from the basement, made between 1993 and the 2000 – the montage of a self-documentation of the Viennese truck driver Peter Haindl in video images, a monologue full of abyss and a pandemonium of the Austrian soul.

The first film made by both directors That's all (AT 2001) documents the daily life of Germans, Russians and Armenians in a village near Kaliningrad, where the resettlement policy after the Second World War created a multinational village. The film celebrated its premiere at the Nyon Film Festival, where he received the Regards Neufs Award for Young Directors.

In 2002, Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel founded the film production company Vento Film to produce their films independently. They then made their second documentary film together, Babooska (AT/IT 2005). The directors spent a year traveling around Italy with the artist of the same name and his traveling circus. The result is a melancholy and humorous road movie about modern nomadism. While researching Babooska, Covi and Frimmel met their next protagonist Tairo, to which they dedicated the film Mister Universe (AT/IT 2016). Babooska premiered at the Berlinale 2006 in the International Forum of Young Cinema and received the award for the best first film. At the Diagonal 2006, Babooska received the Diagonal Grand Prix as the best Austrian documentary film for his “subtle observation” and the “precise atmospheric drawing of the images” (precise atmospheric drawing of the images).
