The 65ᵃ edition of the David Di Donatello Awards
Postponed until Friday 8 May the awards ceremony live on RAI 1 in the early evening conducted by Carlo Conti
Friday 8 the award ceremony of the 65ᵃ edition of the David di Donatello Awards, an important birthday that will be celebrated live on prime time on Rai1. Conducting the edition 2020 is entrusted to Carlo Conti. During the ceremony, numerous protagonists of Italian and international cinema will award twenty-five David di Donatello Awards and the David Specials.
The David di Donatello Awards are organized by the Accademia del Cinema Italiano Foundation - David di Donatello Awards and RAI: Piera Detassis is the President and Artistic Director of the Academy, the Board of Directors is composed of Francesco Rutelli, Carlo Fontana, Mario Turetta, Francesca Cima, Luigi Lonigro, Mario Lorini, Domenico Dinoia, Edoardo De Angelis, Francesco Ranieri Martinotti, Giancarlo Leone.
The 65ᵃ edition of the event takes place under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic, with the contribution of the MiBACT Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and for Tourism - Directorate General for Cinema and Audiovisual, in agreement with AGIS and ANICA and with participation, as Supporting Founding Members, by SIAE and Nuovo IMAIE.
THE AWARDS OF 65ᵃ EDITION
The Jury of the Academy of Italian Cinema - David di Donatello Awards awards 22 awards for films released in Italy from 1st January to 31 December 2019, in movie theaters:
- 20 David Awards for Italian cinema: film, direction, first-time director, original screenplay, non-original script, producer, leading actress, main character, supporting actress, supporting actor, author of the photograph, musician, original song, scenographer, costume designer, make-up artist, acconciatore, editor, sound, visual effects VFX.
- 1 Feature Documentary Award: since last year, a commission made up of seven experts in office for two years - Guido Albonetti, Pedro Armocida, Osvaldo Bargero, Raffaella Giancristofaro, Stefania Ippoliti, Paola Jacobbi, Giacomo Ravesi - has the task of preselecting the fifteen works to be submitted for the jury's vote and then reaching the fifth. In this way, we intend to promote a more sustainable vision, informed and attentive of the "cinema of reality" by the jury.
- 1 David Award for international cinema, intended for the best foreign film distributed in Italy.
A national jury of students from the last two years of secondary school of second grade chooses from a selection of thirty films, established in synergy between Agiscuola, Presidency and Executive Council of the Academy of Italian Cinema, and vote electronically:
- 1 David Giovani Award, intended for the best Italian film with themes close to the new generations.
A special commission, appointed by the President and led by Andrea Piersanti with Giada Calabria, Francesca Calvelli, Leonardo Diberti, Paolo Fondato, Elisabetta Lodoli, Enrico Magrelli, Lamberto Mancini, Mario Mazzetti, Paolo Mereghetti, assigns
- 1 Prize David di Donatello for the Best Italian short film
Introduced in 2019 the David of the Spectator is an award that intends to express the attention and thanks of the Academy to the films and authors who have strongly contributed to the industrial success of the entire film chain. The recognition will go to the film, released by 31 December, which will have scored the highest number of spectators and presences calculated by the end of February.
I David Specials, among which the David of 65, will be announced later, designated by the Presidency and the Executive Council and will be assigned to personalities from the world of cinema.
THE STORY OF THE DAVID DI DONATELLO
The David di Donatello story begins in 1950, when the Open Gate Club was founded in Rome. Given the growing importance of cinema in those years, between 1953 and the 1955 the Committee for Art and Culture and the International Cinema Club was born, which gives rise to the David di Donatello Awards for the best Italian and foreign film production.
The 5 July of 1956 takes place there first award ceremony of the David di Donatello: the films Bread love and ... e The big maneuvers are awarded for Italian production, Vittorio De Sica and Gina Lollobrigida are the best actors respectively for their performances in Pane, love e… e The most beautiful woman in the world, Walt Disney is the best foreign producer for Lady and the Tramp. Over the years, the award ceremonies have alternated: Roma, Taormina, Florence, then from 1981 Rome again.
Vittorio Gassman and Alberto Sordi are the actors that, for the most times, seven to be precise, they received the David di Donatello Award in the Best Leading Actor category; the same recognition was awarded five times to Marcello Mastroianni, four to Toni Servillo, Nino Manfredi and Giancarlo Giannini, three to Elio Germano and Ugo Tognazzi. Two awards to Carlo Verdone, Roberto Benigni, Sergio Castellitto, Stefano Accorsi, Valerio Mastandrea, Adriano Celentano, Francesco Nuti, Gian Maria Will.
Sofia Loren is the record holder in the Best category actress protagonist, with six figurines; followed by Monica Vitti and Margherita Buy, five times awarded the recognition. Four David Awards went to Mariangela Melato and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, three to Gina Lollobrigida and Silvana Mangano, two to Anna Magnani, Claudia Cardinale, Giuliana De Sio, Elena Sofia Ricci, Lina Sastri, Florinda Bolkan and Asia Argento.
Between directors Francesco Rosi obtained the highest number of statuettes for the Best direction: his, indeed, six David are gone. Four to Mario Monicelli and Giuseppe Tornatore, three to Matteo Garrone, Ettore Scola, Ermanno Olmi, Federico Fellini. Two David to Paolo Sorrentino, Luchino Visconti, Vittorio De Sica, Franco Zeffirelli, Marco Bellocchio, Gillo Pontecorvo, Pietro Germi and the Taviani brothers.
Among writers five awards went to Sandro Petraglia, four to Stefano Rulli and Ugo Chiti, three to Furio Scarpelli, Leonardo Welcome, Piero De Bernardi and Matteo Garrone, two to Francesco Bruni, Paolo Virzì, Ettore Scola, Paolo Sorrentino, Giancarlo de Cataldo, Massimo Gaudioso, Maurizio Braucci, Daniele Lucchetti, Francesco Piccolo, Francesca Archibugi, Carlo Verdone.
Ennio Morricone received nine David for Best musician, the set designer and costume designer Danilo Donati has won eight awards, while four prizes were awarded to Dante Ferretti for Best scenographer. Luca Bigazzi received seven David for Best author of the photograph, Tonino Delli Colli quattro. Five statuettes were awarded to Ruggero Mastroianni for Best editor.
The girl from the lake Andrea Molaioli got ten David di Donatello, new per The great beauty Paolo Sorrentino, Black souls by Francesco Munzi, Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni, The last emperor Bernardo Bertolucci, Bread and Tulips Silvio Soldini, The Profession of Arms by Ermanno Olmi e Dogman by Matteo Garrone. Otto awards for Criminal novel by Michele Placido e To win Marco Bellocchio. Set prizes went to They called Jeeg by Gabriele Mainetti, The story of the tales by Matteo Garrone, Human capital by Paolo Virzì, We believed Mario Martone, The celebrity Paolo Sorrentino, Gomorrah by Matteo Garrone e Hopefully it's female by Mario Monicelli.
The numerous are also of great prestige David Specials assigned over the decades: among others, a Steven Spielberg, Diane Keaton and Stefania Sandrelli, as well as Dario Argento, Francesca Lo Schiavo and Uma Thurman awarded in the last edition together with Tim Burton who received the David for Cinematic Excellence; to international movie stars, from Martin Scorsese to Al Pacino, da Sean Connery a Tom Cruise; to the interpreters of the best European cinema, like Isabelle Huppert and Alain Delon; to many beloved protagonists of our cinema, which are added to the names already mentioned above, da Alida Valli a Virna List, from Lina Wertmüller to Liliana Cavani, by Dino Risi |
