Special 74th International Venice Film Festival – reviews #1

Opening Film of this 74th edition of the Venice Film Festival in Venice is Downsizing, latest work of the acclaimed filmmaker Alexander Payne, in competition for the Golden Lion.

In order to solve the problem of overpopulation, some Norwegian scientists found a way to lessen people of several centimeters. In this way there will be many benefits, both from an economic point of view that environmental. Obviously, every citizen will be free to choose whether to have or not shrinking. Paul and his wife Audrey, eg, They are among those interested in this new experiment. When changing lives, But, Audrey will pull back, leaving Paul alone to come to terms with the new world and trying to figure out what his role within it.

A great metaphor for life, the meaning and, not least, of society - especially the American one, repeatedly "thrown into question" what true, great protagonist of the whole cinematography of Payne along with the theme of the trip itself, as a necessary step to growth and change. If we think, But, the previous works of the author, we realize that his latest feature film is to establish a sort of "change of course": by the need to tell the universal through the single minding to more than form substance, It is passing irretrievably to a work in which the form seems to have the best of all the rest. And here, who, at the same Payne it seems out of hand control of the situation, giving life to a "majestic", but much, very pretentious in which an initial potentially brilliant idea can soon end in a dangerous rhetoric and banal mannerisms.

Shortly convince, therefore, brilliant performers such as Matt Damon and the great Christoph Waltz: albeit sliding and, somehow "light", This feature Payne seems in every respect one of those products aimed at buying up to Oscars, but of which, following the vision, remain unfortunately very little.

Sin. Especially because, generally, at the opening of a festival like this in Venice we are always expected to scream masterpiece. The beginning, But, This year has been quite tiepidino. And to think that last year he was chosen to open the show even with a work like La La Land..but that's another story.
