#TFF 42ma ed. : the news

#TFF 42ma ed. 22-30 November from 2024 directed by #GiulioBase

“The Torino Film Festival has always been and remains a cinephile and authorial festival, a free-spirited film exhibition and competition, original, fresco, independent, scratchy”.

This is how the new Artistic Director began, son of migrants born in Turin to whom he owes everything, according to him.

This edition of the #TFF – directed by Giulio Base – it is in continuity with the past and at the same time keeps an eye on the new generations, capable of living, interpret and share that strong and research soul that the TFF has always had and carried forward.

“His enthusiasm is tangible. We have already seen it and I am convinced that we will have further proof of it in the coming months: Giulio Base will dedicate himself to this new adventure with all the passion he has always had for cinema, safeguarding the legacy of the festival and contributing with his ideas to give further prestige and impetus to a festival which in Italy and abroad is seen as one of the most eagerly awaited events in the world of cinema. Focus on young people, a winning key" comments the Undersecretary for Culture Lucia Borgonzoni.

“Giulio Base's festival keeps its helm firmly on the founding soul of the TFF but will certainly be able to surprise us with some important innovations, interpreting it with his many authorial souls, director, actor and producer – underlines Enzo Ghigo, president of the National Cinema Museum. He demonstrated this both in his project presented during the tender and will confirm it, I'm sure, even from today onwards. I can only wish him and the whole team good luck.".

“The next Torino Film Festival is eight months away but the main lines of this edition are already emerging, born by young people and for young people, and that it must continue to address young people, also using the new languages of cinema and its evolutions – declares Domenico De Gaetano, director of the National Cinema Museum. It remains an original and independent festival, linked to the territory but at the same time capable of intercepting the great changes in international film criticism".

“I saw the Turin Film Festival born, which was then called the International Youth Cinema Festival, I breathed the air of those years even though I was still young, I witnessed the ferment and social and cultural change in Turin in the early 1980s – says Giulio Base, artistic director of the Torino Film Festival. I have followed him from a distance over the years and now being here is very exciting for me. I built the 42nd TFF piece by piece, tying together ideas, thoughts, contacts and desires to give life to that plot which is certainly one of the dreams of my life".

These are the first news.

MARLON BRANDO myth by Giulio Base

The great tribute to Marlon Brando (of which this year marks the centenary of its birth) It includes 24 titles that trace his career from the beginning of 1950 up to one of the latest interpretations of the 1996. Charismatic and very talented, Brando played very different roles, imposing an acting style far from the canons of the time and which contributed to consecrating him as one of the sacred monsters of the history of cinema.

The poster of the 42nd edition of the TFF is also dedicated to Marlon Brando, portrayed in 1972 on the set of the controversial “Last Tango in Paris” directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. It is one of the rare photos in which he looks directly into the lens, a complicit and sly shot, that seduces and shows, without compromise, its unparalleled beauty. (Ph. Eva Serena / Iconic Images)
