RAI CINEMA ALLA 77. VENICE FILM EXHIBITION 2020

I'm eighteen the titles, between films, documentaries and short films, present at the Lido in the different sections of the 77. Venice International Film Festival co-produced by Rai Cinema; four of these are distributed in Italy by 01 Distribution.

"The edition of the exhibition this year, strongly desired by the director Barbera and by all the institutions that support it, is the most incisive answer that at this moment the Italian film industry can give to Italy and the world to represent the vitality and strength of our cinema – dice Paolo Del Brocco, CEO of Rai Cinema -. An appointment necessary to kick off an effective restart, and restart the whole movie machine that, like and perhaps more than other sectors, he still experiences moments of suffering.

The high quality selection of the films co-produced by Rai Cinema present this year suggests to the public the desire to return to the theater. Established authors, others more experimental, first works, documentaries: the commitment is to rebuild that fabric of trust towards our cinema that can restore continuity with the positive results of the last few seasons.

In Competition official of the exhibition, we present three works of great visual strength, very different from each other in style and narrative register, two of which are directed by female directors.

"Night" marks the return of a great author, particularly dear and close to us like Gianfranco Rosi who, Also this time, chooses to tell with great narrative and visual power the hidden stories found in the everyday life of those living in Syria, l’Iraq, Kurdistan and Lebanon. His unmistakable look, which brings him back to the Competition in Venice after a Golden Lion and a Golden Bear, it reveals to us a humanity that overcomes conflicts and geographical and temporal boundaries.

The other two competing titles are “Miss Marx” by Susanna Nicchiarelli e "The Macaluso sisters" by Emma Dante. The first, a very talented director who we accompany from the beginning in her artistic career, now she is ready to reveal her full maturity to compete in the main selection with an exciting story lived between sentimental contradictions and struggle for female emancipation. While Emma Dante, who returns to the competition where he made his debut with his first film direction by winning a Volpi Cup, with "The Macaluso sisters" explore the family ties of five women of different generations.

With particular pleasure - he concludes Paolo Del Brocco – we also underline the importance that the opening of the exhibition is entrusted after eleven years to an Italian film: "Laces" Daniele Luchetti, a story of feelings and relationships, played by an extraordinary cast ".

“Three documentary films in the Official Selection for a generation of directors who reveal a need to testify to the contemporary together with the need to investigate the past – adds Nicola Claudio, president of Rai Cinema –. Giorgio Verdelli's work "Paolo Conte - Go with me", shows us a fascinating portrait full of unpublished materials of one of the most appreciated and loved Italian singer-songwriters; "War and peace" by Massimo D’Anolfi and Martina Parenti, in a reflection through images on the long relationship between cinema and war, from the sequences filmed by the pioneers of cinema in 1911, on the occasion of the Italian invasion of Libya, up to the present day with the filming shot with smartphones. "Molecules", by Andrea Segre, shot in Venice, a testimony to the emptying and suspension of our lives caused by Covid-19 in the past months, reflects on the relationship between the city and the waters through memories personal and family and meetings with Venetian citizens.

And finally in the Critics' Week “The Rossellinis”, shot by Alessandro Rossellini, first granddaughter of the great Master, that a 55 years under the almost unsustainable weight of the surname he brings, he ironically faces the saga of his family, forcing relatives to have a sort of family therapy in front of the camera ".

Two more titles in the Competition of Horizons: "The predators", directorial debut by Pietro Castellitto, that proves, already at his first job, to have a very personal cinematographic language. E “Nowhere Special”, the return of an author like Uberto Pasolini, who in Venice had won the prize for directing in Horizons with the previous one “Still Life”.

Many still films, documentaries and short films present at Days and to International Critics' Week. Among others, the ambitious first film by Carlo Hintermann “The Book of Vision”, the film by Giorgia Farina “Romantic guide to lost places” with an exceptional cast that sees Clive Owen alongside Jasmine Trinca, and the short film by Giorgio Rights “Zombie” on the issue of parental alienation.
