#CANNES2017 – Two Sicilian inaugurate the 56th Semaine de la Critique: Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza

an honor usually intended to French films – says Anthony Emanuele Barbagallo, Councillor for Tourism, Sport and Entertainment of Sicily Region which co-financed the film through Sicily Film Commission, within the Sensi program Contemporanei.  "For the first time in the history of the Festival – adds Alessandro Rais, Director of the Special Assembly for the cinema and audiovisual / Sicily Film Commission – this record is reserved for Italian films and this important and qualified presence is even more relevant in an edition that instead sees the absence of Italian films in the official competition ".

SICILIAN GHOST STORY  is the first film shot entirely among the lakes and forests of the Nebrodi National Park and in the Municipality of Troina (In), in the heart of Sicily, a set of extraordinary natural beauty, enhanced by the skill of cinematographer, Luca Bigazzi.
The film also won the first place in the feature film funding ranking evaluated by the Board of the Sicilian Region, confirming the research and promotion of the best Sicilian talent held by the Department function, and by the relevant offices. Just as it had happened in the past for Salvo, the Piazza debut film and Grassadonia or Waiting by Piero Messina, for Darker Than Midnight Sebastiano Rice or Ghosts of St. Beryl Edward Morabito, rewarded later by the most important international film festivals.

Antonio Piazza have been invited by director Charles Tesson to open the prestigious section. It is the first time for an Italian film. The same congratulates: Antonio Piazza and Fabio Grassadonia open the Critics' Week of the Cannes Film Festival with an incredible movie, crossing different genres, combining political glance, fantasy and romance, with powerful mastery. 

E’ the story of Joseph a thirteen year old boy who disappears. Luna, in love with a classmate him, not resigned to his mysterious disappearance. He rebels to silence and complicity that surround it and even to find him, It descends into the dark world that engulfed him, and he in a lake a mysterious doorway.
In the words of Leonardo Sciascia, “Sicily is a whole great size and we can not stay inside unimaginative”.  The collision between a plane of reality and a fantastic floor made us recognize the elements that long ago we had before our eyes: a ghost and the guilt of a world that suppresses Children, tell the filmmakers.  Elements for a ghost story. The protagonists are the thirteen Julia Jedlikowska (Luna), Polish Palermo, and Gaetano Fernandez (Giuseppe) Zisa of Palermo neighborhood, both for the first time on the big screen, met after a long casting of nine months in Sicily. On their debut the other four guys costars Corinne Musallari, Lorenzo Curcio, Andrea Falzone, Federico Finocchiaro. During the summer before shooting, under the guidance of directors, the boys took part in a preparatory workshop, divided into several phases, which gradually he led them into the story and in the places where the shooting took place.
Alongside them the actors Sabine Timoteo, Vincenzo Amato, Filippo Luna e Nino Prester.
The film relies on the contribution of MiBAC, the support of the Sicilian Region - Department of Tourism Sport and Entertainment - Special Office for Film and Audiovisual / Sicily Filmcommission, part of the "Contemporary Senses", the support of Eurimages and the Creative Europe Program, It is supported by the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program, developed with the support of the Bilateral Fund for Development Co-production of Cinematographic Works Italo-French, con la partecipazione di Cinema Help To The World, CNC, French institute.
With the screenplay of Ghost Story Sicilian Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza have already received the prestigious Sundance Institute Global Filmmaking Award at the Sundance Film Festival 2016, The award annually honors “emerging filmmakers from different parts of the world who possess the originality, the talent and vision to be celebrated as the future of world cinema”.
