Back from 28 November 2019 al 27 January 2020 the sixth edition of The Documentary of the Month, The festival spread over the whole country directed by Marino Pinangelo, Director of Notebook Cinemareale and coordinated by Maud Corino. The annual event dedicated to great contemporary documentary cinema is organized by Doc / it - Italian Documentary Association with the support of Mibact - Directorate General for Cinema, Lazio region, in collaboration with Casa del Cinema, Zetema, Kinema - Cultural Association, and with the patronage of the University of Roma Tre, Department of Philosophy, Communication, Entertainment.

Two titles presented Italian: It is the dream of Giovanni Cioni, premiered at the Festival dei Popoli, one of the oldest festivals dedicated to documentary cinema whose 60th edition ended in Florence on 9 November, and Valentina A Spring Spring, the film that represented Italy in the most important international festivals, as HotDocs, DoK Leipzig, ZagrebDox, and two international Oscar nominees: The Cave di Feras Fayyad e One Child Nation di Jialing Zhang e Nanfu Wang. Starting from the Casa del Cinema in Rome, the documentaries will move to the Beltrade Cinema in Milan, at the Astra Cinema in Naples (AstraDoc – Journey into the Cinema of the Real” takes place at Cinema Astra and is organized by Arci Movie, Parallel 41, University “Frederick II” of Naples and Coinor, with the patronage of the Municipality of Naples), at the Cinema Lumière of the Cineteca di Bologna, al Cinema Red and Black di Palermo, at the Cinema La Compagnia in Florence and at the Cinemazero in Pordenone (in collaboration with The Voices of the Inquiry – Pordenone Docs Fest).

It starts on 28 November at 21.00 with The Cave by Syrian director Feras Fayyad already nominated for an Oscar 2018 con Last Man in Aleppo. The director returns to his hometown, Wartorn, to follow a team of female doctors who tirelessly treat victims in an underground hospital as they fight systemic sexism. The documentary takes the viewer on an underground landscape similar to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max (1979), a network of secret tunnels under the city of Ghouta, near Damascus. The Cave premiered at the Toronto Film Festival where it won the Audience Award, al British Film Institute London Film Festival, all’International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, recently at the Festival dei Popoli and is among the Oscar nominees 2020. At the same time the film will be presented at the Beltrade Cinema in Milan on 28 November at 21.30. It will then move to the Astra Cinema in Naples on 29 November at 20.30, at the Cinema Lumière in Bologna on December 11 at 20.00, to La Compagnia di Firenze on 16 January 2020 all 21.00 al Cinema Red and Black di Palermo il 22 January at 19.00 and finally at the Cinemazero in Pordenone the 23 January at 20.45.

Second Roman appointment at the Casa del Cinema on 2 December at 21.00 with the Italian film Non è sogno by Giovanni Cioni, that will accompany him on all dates. A work born from a laboratory in the Perugia prison during the rehearsals of the dialogues between Totò and Ninetto Davoli in What are the clouds? by Pier Paolo Pasolini and fragments of La Vida es Sueño by Calderón de la Barca. Rehearsals become the starting point for dream stories, messages, songs, reflections on the human condition. Life is all a staging? The film was presented at the Locarno Film Festival and the Annecy Festival as well as the Festival dei Popoli 2019. It is not a dream then moves to Milan at the Cinema Beltrade on 3 December at 21.30, al Cinema Red and Black di Palermo il 4 December at 19.00, at the Astra Cinema in Naples the 6 December at 20.30, at the Cinema Lumière in Bologna on 18 December at 17.30 as part of the Pasolini Awards, to La Compagnia di Firenze on 14 January at 21.00, and at the Cinemazero in Pordenone on 16 January at 20.45, always in the presence of the director.

The 9 December at 21 it will be the turn of One Child Nation by Jialing Zhang and Nanfu Wang. The latter, after challenging the Chinese government in Hooligan Sparrow (2016) returns to the attack to unmask the secrets of that policy that has condemned millions of rumors. In conversation with both the victims and the executioners, is a reflection on the terrifying consequences of mass-media propaganda that breaks the silence on an episode in the history of humanity that has compromised many lives. On the other hand, right from the name, fate was sealed. “In”, in Chinese, it means "man" and when it was born, in 1985, China was in the midst of the one-child policy: what a tragedy, for his family, discover that the firstborn would be a girl! One Child Nation has been successfully presented at numerous festivals. Among these the Sundance, the Tribeca Film Festival, CPH:DOX, Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival e in Italia il Biografilm. The film will continue at the Beltrade Cinema in Milan on 10 December at 21.30, on December 11 in three contemporary stages at the Cinema Lumière in Bologna at 18.00, al Cinema Rouge et Noir di Palermo alle 19.00 and at the Cinemazero di Pordenone at 20.45, finally to La Compagnia di Firenze on 19 December at 21.00.

Documentary Month will close on 16 December at 21.00 the Casa del Cinema, A Spring by Valentina Primavera in the presence of the director and editor Federico Neri. In the documentary Valentina Primavera tells the pain inside the home of her family and of her mother Fiorella who one day decides to leave her husband Bruno, after forty years of abuse, under the eye of his daughter's camera. Valentina accompanies the viewer inside her home, in the places of screams, where it tells a woman prisoner of a wrong marriage, crushed by a violent man and paralyzed by a provincial mentality that still today defends a male chauvinist ideology behind the alibi of the sacredness of the family. Una Primavera was presented at DoK Leipzig, HotDocs, ZagrebDox and Biografilm. The director will follow the film from Rome to the Cinema La Compagnia in Florence on 17 December at 21.00, at the Cinema Lumière in Bologna on 18 December at 20.15, at Cinemazero in Pordenone on 19 December at 20.45, at Cinema Beltrade in Milan on 20 December at 21.30, until the last stop in Palermo at the Cinema Rouge et Noir on 15 January at 19.00.

Among the events of Il Mese del Documentario there are also two important master classes, appointments dedicated to meeting industry professionals and great contemporary authors. Already guests of the section, among others, Pippo Delbono, Susanna Nicchiarelli, Sabina Guzzanti, Marco Bertozzi.

Monday 9 December in the Kodak room from hours 17 at 19 meeting with Pietro Marcello and the writer and screenwriter Maurizio Braucci who will talk about the creation process of Martin Eden, Pietro Marcello's latest film presented in international competition at the Venice Film Festival and distributed all over the world. Pietro Marcello is one of the Italian directors who have most influenced contemporary film production. His masterpieces Beautiful and lost, The mouth of the wolf, The passage of the line.

Monday 16 December, always in the Kodak room, meeting with the French editor Aline Hervé, which has in its portfolio numerous works considered part of the history of contemporary Italian cinema, including The passage of the line and Martin Eden by Pietro Marcello, For Ulysses and From the return of Giovanni Cioni, Deliver me Federica di Giacomo, The last things to Irene Dionisio, in addition to the collaboration with Paolo Sorrentino as an editing assistant.

Documentary Month will end on 27 January 2020 also at the Casa del Cinema with the screening of the winning film of the audience award decreed on a national basis.
