Not convinced a good novel brought to the screen in 35mm film B&N

Submission No competition at the 76th Venice Film Festival in Venice, The Painted Bird - based on the novel by Jerzy Kosinski - is the latest work of director Vaclav Marhoul.

What happens, therefore, If a bird wings are painted with paint? Simple: once soared, since none of his flock will recognize it as being part of the group, the same will be killed by his comrades, and then finish inevitably crashing to the ground. Same fate (almost, it happened, therefore, the young protagonist of the film, initially entrusted to an elderly aunt and - after her death - had to wander the fields, prejudice suffered unspeakable violence, for a growth path that will forever change.

Indubbiamente Marhoul, in questo suo The painted Bird, It took all the effort possible. E, in fact, this work, with regard to the staging same, no doubt to its outstanding directing. Same goes for the choice of a neat black and white, as well as for the realization in 35 mm. The main problem with this feature, however, It lies in the script itself, so as to be loaded - even complicit in the nearly three-hour duration - less and less credible and definitely free.

HE, indeed, the opening scene – where we see the child victim of an attack by some peers, subsequently, will set fire to his ferret - there immediately appear somewhat disturbing, here, during the many travels of the young protagonist, the numerous other acts of violence, from time to time, almost everyone he encountered, It turns out so absurd in their unnatural frequency to ensure that the viewer himself slowly beginning to lose empathy.

And here, despite the potentially interesting attempt to create a sort of fresco of Eastern Europe at the end of World War II, everything appears dangerously Free, smug complacency of the grimmest, that, despite the use of a cast of respect which includes even Udo Kier, Stellan Skarsgard e Harvey Keitel, It seems to have forgotten the basic settings so that a script can be said to be truly successful.

A poco serve, therefore, a direction generally good. There is little a young protagonist who, after all, also shows a good stage presence. As recently even it serves the final scene, where the whole of the feature level could, wanting, Also saved for a corner. Il presente The painted Bird, precisely due to these flaws, It is a job that certainly will be remembered for a long time. Too bad only that it will happen in the negative.
